Biography

Born in 1953 in Homa Bay County along the shores of Lake Victoria in western Kenya, Joel Oswaggo grew up immersed in the traditions, storytelling, and communal lifestyle of the Luo community. These early experiences left an indelible mark on his artistic vision.

Oswaggo pursued independent artistic paths, dedicating himself to mastering draftsmanship and painting by observing his natural and cultural surroundings rather than attending formal art academies.

Relocating to Nairobi, Oswaggo became an integral part of Kenya’s professional fine art community during the late 20th century. His works gained regular representation in major Nairobi institutions, including Gallery Watatu and Red Hill Art Gallery, as well as high-profile regional art auctions. His paintings are prized by collectors for their archival and cultural value in preserving traditional East African heritage.
