Biography

Born in 1947 in Limuru, Kiambu District, Kenya, John Njenga Kamau grew up in Ngecha village. Influenced by the social and political transformations of 1960s Kenya, he turned to visual art as a primary form of expression.

Wanyu received primary education in Ngecha but did not pursue formal academic art training. He taught himself painting techniques through trial and practice.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Wanyu helped turn his home village of Ngecha into a major hub for contemporary Kenyan art by co-founding the Ngecha Art Group alongside peers like Sane Wadu.

Wanyu became one of the flagship artists at Gallery Watatu in Nairobi under Ruth Schaffner. His work gained international collection status, fetching record prices (such as his painting Never, Never, Never Again! at Gallery Watatu). His paintings are held in global public and private collections, including the Museum der Weltkulturen in Frankfurt, the Peabody Essex Museum in Massachusetts, and the African Museum of Art in Seoul.
