Biography

Born in Hollywood, California, in 1935/1936, Yony Waite spent much of her youth on the Pacific island of Guam. Her early exposure to nature and diverse coastal landscapes fostered a lifelong passion for environmental subjects.

Waite studied Fine Art at UC Berkeley, where legendary artist Richard Diebenkorn served as her mentor, teaching her to observe structure, form, and natural light. She later moved to Japan, where she spent time mastering the discipline of Sumi-e (ink brush painting).

In the mid-1960s, Waite relocated to Kenya, where she became a naturalized citizen. In 1968/1969, seeing a need for dedicated exhibition spaces for contemporary artists, she co-founded Gallery Watatu in Nairobi with painters Robin Anderson and David Hart. The gallery became the focal point of contemporary visual art in East Africa.

Beyond Gallery Watatu, Waite established the Wildebeeste Workshop along the Athi River, creating a creative haven and retreat for regional artists. She executed major public murals, including works for the Kenya National Archives and the Kampala Serena Hotel. Her art remains widely collected by private institutions, museums, and international art auctions across East Africa and Europe.

05 - Historical context

Gallery Watatu connection

Yony Waite holds a central position in Gallery Watatu's history as one of its three original founders in 1968/1969 ("Watatu" meaning "Three" in Swahili, symbolizing the three founding artists: Yony Waite, Robin Anderson, and David Hart). Long before the gallery was later acquired by Ruth Schaffner in 1984, Waite and her co-founders built the initial infrastructure that elevated modern fine painting in Kenya and opened up professional display spaces for indigenous and local East African visual artists.
