Biography

Born in 1937 in Mbiuni Kwa Mutula Village, Machakos County, Ancent Soi grew up in a rural farming family, spending his childhood herding cows across Eastern Kenya’s grasslands.

In 1965, Soi moved to Nairobi to seek new opportunities. He secured work managing Stall No. 1 at the Nairobi City Market, selling woodcarvings and paintings for local politicians and traders. Surrounding himself with art, he began painting in his spare time. His natural talent quickly drew the attention of buyers and tourists.

Soi’s international breakthrough came in 1971 when he won a continent-wide competition to design an official poster for the 1972 Munich Olympic Games. Traveling to Germany to receive his award cemented his confidence. Through the 1980s and 1990s, he exhibited regularly at Gallery Watatu, becoming one of Ruth Schaffner’s most popular artists.

Soi remained an active painter throughout his life, working from his home and market studio until his passing in 2022. His paintings are preserved in major public institutions and collections worldwide, including the African Heritage House, the Nairobi Contemporary Art Institute (NCAI), and the North Carolina Museum of Art.
