Biography

Born in 1976 in Ngecha Village, Kiambu District, Joseph Kamau grew up in the cradle of Kenya’s self-taught art movement. Surrounded by pioneering artists who were transforming Ngecha into an art hub, he earned the nickname “Cartoon” for his fluid line work and character sketching.

In 1994, Cartoon joined the newly formed Banana Hill Art Group. That same year, Ruth Schaffner at Gallery Watatu purchased his first professional paintings and resold them to an international collector from Japan, launching his career on the global stage.

By 1999, Cartoon’s standing in African fine art was solidified when one of his signature paintings was selected for the cover of Thames & Hudson’s landmark book, Contemporary African Art. In 2001, he won a Royal Art Scholarship, leading to a residency in the UK and a featured presentation at the Royal Over-Seas League Scholars Exhibition in London (2002).

Returning to Kenya in 2003, Cartoon established a studio in Banana Hill. He continues to exhibit and produce narrative oil paintings, with his works permanently showcased at venues like the Red Hill Art Gallery and in private collections worldwide.
