Harmonizing Wildlife and Cultural Mythology

Born in 1947 in Mwangini, Machakos District, Kenya, Kivuthi Mbuno has earned global acclaim for his refined, surrealist drawing style. Drawing inspiration from his Akamba heritage, personal experiences, and a deep reverence for nature, Mbuno constructs serene compositions where wildlife, human figures, and ancestral landscapes exist in harmony.

Before devoting himself full-time to visual art in 1976, Mbuno worked as a safari cook and guide in major national parks across Kenya and Tanzania. These years spent in the wilderness, observing wild animals and traditional hunting techniques, provided the lifelong visual vocabulary for his artistic career.

Distinctive Fine Line Artistry

While many of his contemporaries from the Gallery Watatu circle worked in bold, heavily textured acrylics and oils, Mbuno forged a unique aesthetic identity using fine ink lines, colored pencils, and soft pastels on paper.

His drawings feature stylized, elongated animals—antelopes, leopards, birds, and mythological creatures—alongside traditional Akamba hunters set against expansive, minimalist horizons. His artworks combine precise draftsmanship with dreamlike tranquility, inviting viewers into a world where myth and reality merge.

International Prestige and Museum Collections

Exhibited extensively by Gallery Watatu in the 1980s and 1990s, Mbuno’s delicate masterworks quickly gained international recognition. Today, his works are housed in prestigious museum collections worldwide, including:

  • The Völkerkunde Museum (Frankfurt, Germany).

  • The Museum of African Art (New York).

  • The Dallas Museum of Art (USA).

  • The National Museum of African Art – Smithsonian Institution (Washington D.C.).

  • The Saatchi Gallery and Tate Modern (London).

Kivuthi Mbuno remains recognized as a master of fine-line drawing in African art history, leaving an enduring visual legacy that continues to captivate art enthusiasts around the globe.
